Over this past weekend, police began tickets for various offenses, including simple nudity. Authorities in Spokane regularly make a springtime show of force, and they had announced earlier this year that they would be stepping up patrols to curb driving and lewd behavior. However, the sweep this weekend exceeds the customary springtime display. Uniformed officers were joined by plainclothes police on foot and on their own bicycles. The officers escorted people from the park and issued citations, including citations for simple nudity. The People's Park location in Spokane is a traditional site for clothing-optional recreation. Although it is not officially sanctioned, nudity there has received little enforcement attention. The Naturist Action Committee is attempting to determine if the recent police action represents a change in official policy or may simply be a case of over-exuberance on the part of a few officers. Meanwhile, NAC urges Naturists using People's Park in Spokane to do so with extreme caution.
